Forum: forums Subject: Bookmarks overwritten!

Dear IA team:

Currently I have almost 2000 bookmarks added in my list. But since a pair of months, I noted the bookmarks service is not more rejecting the addition of 'new' bookmarks which was previously added to the list.

The common message I have when I was trying to add some bookmark of an item previously registered was 'The book you're trying to add does exist in your list' or something that this.

But recently, there's not warning about 'add' a 'new' item previously registered. I make a test with some previously registered items, and there's not warning, and the item lost the date of original registration [what appears as 'Bookmarked: 3 years ago', or 'Bookmarked: 123 days ago'], and only update to the actual day.

In my case, this is very important because i'm bookmarking some complete collections with Patristic texts, which are being digitalized volume by volume. And without this warning, i have not idea about the items of a large collection [as exempla, the S. Aurelius Augustinus Opera Omnia, edited by Caillau and Guillon which count 42 items] which i previously review, and save in my pc for my personal use.

The abolition of this warning makes i have a lot of duplicate items, which I must check with programs able to find duplicate files in my hd, where I keep some hundreds of volumes of the valuable collections which you magnificently provide to all the users and visitors.

I hope this be only a bug, and can be fixed if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Francisco Arriaga. [http://plgo.org]

Dear Mooffie:

I was unable to answer before, please forgive this delay.

Your project/proposal seems very useful and enhanced respect to the basic 'bookmarks' service inside Internet Archive.

But, as i say before, i must to deal with around 2,000 items already bookmarked, and the only idea of have to add each one to the utility you are proposing, scares me.

Is there any option or tool which allow to import from a Bookmarks list of IA directly to your plug-in?

Thanks for any answer, and mainly for your interest in this little issue.

Francisco.

"Is there any option or tool which allow to import from a Bookmarks list of IA directly to your plug-in?"

Yes, you can easily import your 2275 items using this tool:

http://www.typo.co.il/~mooffie/tiger/importer/

(It's linked from Tiger's homepage.)

It took me less than a minute to import your bookmarks. Here's a proof:

(BTW, the Importing tool makes it possible, via filtering and/or the "Comment:" field, to organize your items under several tags. In other words, you don't have to limit yourself to a single "reviewed" tag only.)

"Thanks for any answer, and mainly for your interest in this little issue."

This isn't a "little issue". This is a giant issue. The inadequate bookmarking system here greatly hinders the use of this site. For me Tiger solves the problem.

A little comment about this screenshot:

The "Year" column is filled-in for two items (1920, 1931). That's only because I happened to visit these two items; The Import tool doesn't import this Year field (it can't, because this data doesn't appear on the bookmarks page).

Again, thanks a lot for your answer, Pal!

I know -and i suffer too- the system of Bookmars here and in other sites -as GoogleBooks, BNF/Gallica- is a 'giant issue', as you say.

But i wrote 'little issue' thinking in the Bookmarks service as a 'part' of a largest process, where the 'labels' created/provided by the indexation' server is involved too.

If we are being affected by the Bookmarks service, this is because the label system here, and in a lot of other sites, -i. e. you mentioned the trouble with the 'year' field in the final list of items indexed- is being inadequate to deal with the contents indexed here and there.

I was writting about this theme sometimes, [http://plgo.org/?p=20, http://plgo.org/?p=121, http://adastra.plgo.org/?p=147] and my point of view about this is, sadly, that the big competitors in the indexation/digitazion run are not thinking in the final users as owners of a particular or individual library, but as 'occasional visitors' and 'downloaders' of some items.

At this respect, tools as the bookmark manager you are promoting here are valuable tools, but our reality is we will forced to face some other issues in the close future, because the basis of all these matters is not in the final usage of all those resources, but in the inadequate system of indexation.

Again, salus, Pal, and thanks for your comments.

Francisco.

(I'm not from IA's team. I have some idea for a replacement to IA's bookmarks. I'll write about it here early next week (since I won't be here this weekend to reply).)
